The 1950’s Mercedes Bus in Colombo

Recently my sister and her husband were in Colombo and they came across this bus.

This passenger bus symbolizes the commissioning of the Cylon Transport Board (CTB) on the occassion of nationalization of private bus companies on Jan 01, 1958.

The then Prime Minister Hon. S. W. R. D. Bandarnaike and transport minister Hon. Maithripala Senanayake made the innaugural journey from Veyangoda to Colombo.

This Mercedes bus (60 seater) bus was made in Germany in the year 1957 and is in good running condition !!

  1. In India, it started back in 1954 when Tata Motors (then Telco) and Daimler Benz decided to jointly manufacture medium commercial vehicles. The first vehicle rolled out within six months of the contract. The truck deal lasted 15 years. The two firms came together again in 1994 when they signed a joint venture agreement to manufacture Mercedes Benz passenger cars in India and the Mercedes Benz E220 hit the roads the very next year. Tata Motors, however, sold off its entire stake in Mercedes Benz India by 2000-2001.
