How safe are the flat head trucks? What generally happens to the drivers after the collision?

I saw this truck in a bad shape and wondered what would have happened to the driver. First of all these front flat trucks have a very narrow margin for the driver to escape unhurt although the body panel absorbs a lots of impact energy. Secondly, the badly mangled steel traps the driver that you need cutters to pull him out. Horrific!

On this truck I observed that the steering gear and the dashboard were completely deformed and the body panel caved in. It was a side ways but a head-on collision.

And no air bag found!

India needs to act fast to bring in more and more regulations making airbags compulsory in the next one year and so.
